New Cirque du Soleil ‘Drawn to Life’ Show Coming to Disney Springs in Spring 2020

    A a new Cirque du Soleil show called “Drawn to Life” is in development. The new show will be original and promises to pay homage to Disney’s history of animation. President and CEO of the Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group, Daniel Lamarre had this to say on the new project, “We are incredibly inspired by Disney’s immense creative universe. We are convinced that bringing Disney’s magic to life on stage will touch audiences and bring them back to their childhood.”

    La Nouba by Cirque du Soleil had its final performance on December 31, 2017.

    The show was set to open for previews March 20, 2020, and officially premiere April 17, 2020, however those dates will be rescheduled due to the resort wide closures surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic.

    May 5, 2020: On Disney’s Quarter 2 Fiscal Year 2020 earnings call, Disney Chief Financial Officer Christine McCarthy stated the company’s plans to reduce capital expenditures during the Covid-19 pandemic. McCarthy stated that capital expenditures for the parks and resorts would be reduced by $900 million by way of pausing refurbishment and construction projects.

    Details of specific projects that may be subject to delay or cancellation were not stated, but construction on all ongoing Walt Disney World projects was suspended shortly after the park closure in March.

    Cirque du Soleil’s Drawn to Life is not expected to be cancelled as previews were set to begin shortly after Walt Disney World shut down due to the pandemic. The project will be delayed beyond the announced April 17th opening date but is expected to debut shortly after Walt Disney World reopens.

    March 16, 2020: Disney confirmed that previews for the new Cirque du Soleil show will be postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

    August 25, 2019: During the Parks and Resorts presentation at the 2019 D23 Expo, Bob Chapek reported that Walt Disney Imagineering, Walt Disney Animation and Cirque du Soleil are working in collaboration on the new show. Legendary Disney animator, Eric Goldberg took the stage along with part of the Cirque du Soleil team to discuss the project. The new show will combine animation with live actors with the animation interacting with the human performers. Tickets are now on sale for the Spring 2020 opening. The show will open for previews March 20, 2020, and officially premiere April 17, 2020.

    March 13, 2018: WDWMagic.com user danlb_2000 is reporting that Disney filed a permit for a refurbishment to the Cirque du Soleil theater. The permit expires on 1/30/2020.

    March 3, 2017: The Disney Parks Blog confirmed that La Nouba by Cirque du Soleil will have its final performance on December 31, 2017.

    The show first debuted in 1998 and has received numerous changes over the years while retaining the La Nouba name.

    A replacement show has not yet been announced, but it is expected to be another Cirque du Soleil show.
