Rumors previously pointed to an eventual phasing out of Extra Magic Hours. They were first reduced during the summer of 2013, and other reductions have occurred since early 2011.
The debut of Disney After Hours in April 2016 as an upcharge after hours event further fueled this rumor. The Animal Kingdom had it’s evening Extra Magic Hours removed in February of 2011 and rumors now point to Hollywood Studios having their evening hours removed as well.
When the parks re-opened following the 2020 Coronavirus, Extra Magic Hours were also removed. Disney has stated that this is a temporary measure and as a result we are considering this Blue Sky for the time being.
May 28, 2020: Disney is cancelling all existing Fastpass+, Dining Reservations, Experiences and the Disney Dining Plan from May 28, 2020 through September 26, 2021 in anticipation of a new reservation system.
Additional details were outlined on the Disney Parks Blog including the following:
- Fastpass+ will be suspended upon re-opening
- Extra Magic Hours will be suspended upon re-opening
- Temporarily suspending the purchase of new tickets
Guests with existing tickets and Annual Passholders will have the first opportunity to reserve dates at the theme parks when they re-open. All guests will be required to reserve the day or days they plan on going to the parks.
The full statement from Disney is as follows:
Beginning May 28, 2020, all dining reservations, experience bookings, Disney dining plan and FastPass+ selections will be cancelled. Guests with existing Resort reservations will have priority access to the new park reservation system when it becomes available. Additionally, when reservations for dining and other experiences resume, Guests who had existing reservations will receive priority access to rebook. Keep in mind, for dining locations within our parks, Guests will need a park reservation and valid admission before they can rebook dining and experiences.
Guests who purchase a Disney dining plan and tickets for dates between May 28, 2000 and September 26, 2021 will receive an automatic cancellation and refund of their Disney dining plan.
Guests who booked Resort hotel reservations with a Free Dining package for dates between May 28, 2020 and September 26, 2021 will receive an automatic cancellation of their Disney dining plan and are invited to rebook their vacation for later date with a 35% room discount.
Plans to support required physical distancing as well as enhanced cleaning measures, along with a number of other safety and cleanliness protocols, will be implemented as part of the planned phased reopening.
April 22, 2019: BlogMickey.com is reporting that Evening Extra Magic Hours have returned to the November calendar for the Magic Kingdom.
April 10, 2019: KennyThePirate.com is reporting that evening Extra Magic Hours are expected to be removed from the Magic Kingdom beginning in October.
March 17, 2017: WDWNT.com is reporting a rumor that Evening Extra Magic Hours will return to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The rumor states that Disney’s Animal Kingdom will have Evening Extra Magic Hours every night from May 27th through July 4th, 2017.
January 27, 2017: WDWMagic.com is reporting that evening Extra Magic Hours are not listed on the times calendar for Hollywood Studios past February of 2017 leading them to speculate that they may be permanently removed.
Per the blog,
“Disney After Hours” is a three-hour event that will take place once the park closes on the following dates:
- April 14, 21 and 28
- May 5, 8, 12 and 19
A separate event ticket is required for “Disney After Hours.” Guests can check in starting at 7 p.m. each night, with the event hours from 11 p.m. – 2 a.m. Pricing is $149 plus tax for both adults and children (ages 3-9).
FYI: Admission to this special event is limited. You might want to hurry and book tickets ASAP. To purchase tickets, guests may call 407-827-7185.
Additionally, on the My Disney Experience website, Disney now includes two new experiences, “Disney Early Morning Magic – Fantasyland” and “Disney Animal Kingdom Special Activities”. Both events are listed as table service restaurants but there are no additional details. It is possible these two additions are additional events that may lead to the elimination of Extra Magic Hours.
June 17, 2015: WDWMagic.com user lentesta reported that he confirmed with Disney that Extra Magic Hours would remain for 2016.
June 15, 2015: WDWMagic.com user ISTCNavigator57 has reported that Disney has not listed any Extra Magic Hours on the Travel Agents calendar beginning January 1, 2016. WDWMagic.com user WDW1974 has followed this up saying that he expects Extra Magic Hours to be gone within two years.
January 1, 2013: The Disney World website posted that Evening Extra Magic Hours would be for 2 hours after park opening. Previously Evening Extra Magic hours were 3 hours.
August 1, 2011: The Magic Kingdom monorails reduces its hours to one hour after park close. This means it will not run during all of Extra Magic hours
July 11, 2011: The Epcot monorail reduces its hours to one hour after park close. This means it will not run during all of Extra Magic hours
