The yeti in Expedition Everest has not worked properly since 2008. During the 2013 D23 Expo, Imagineer Joe Rohde did acknowledge the complexities associated with fixing the Yeti and did promise that it would be fixed some day.
There is no timetable for a repair and we are considering this rumor Dead.
October 13, 2020: WDWMagic.com user danlb_2000 posted a link to a Notice of Commencement Disney filed for “General Construction” Expedition Everest. There is no indication that this is related to the yeti.
July 6, 2018: Twitter user @shelbunny10 Tweeted at Imagineer Joe Rohde about his promise to fix the Yeti. @joe_rohde responded with, “Yes. Still on it.”
October 23, 2017: Imagineer Joe Rohde posted the following on Twitter:
US Passport officer looks at my passport, my face, and says,”When are you going to fix that yeti?”
March 18, 2017: WDWMagic.com user WDW1974 is reporting that for the 50th Anniversary of Walt Disney World, Disney is looking to add 50 “Magical Enhancements” for the 50th Anniversary. The 50th Anniversary of Walt Disney World is October 1, 2021 and one of the rumored enhancements is an update to Expedition Everest that would include a fix for the Yeti.
May 13, 2016: WDWMagic.com user Lee is reporting that he “regret[s] passing on the lube info. Its validity is questionable.” This goes against information Lee presented years ago about the reason for the broken Yeti.
September 1, 2015: On Episode #86 of the Unofficial Guide’s Disney Dish Podcast with Jim Hill, Jim mentions that a refurbishment is expected to take place on Expedition Everest that will fix the yeti after Flight of Passage opens in 2017.
October 22, 2014: WDWMagic.com user Alektronic has reported that the last update was that Disney has given up on a fix for the yeti, but a replacement may take place in 3-4 years.
August 22, 2014: WDWMagic.com user Alektronic has explained the issues with the Yeti. Reportedly the programming was changed after it was installed into the mountain causing undo stress on the figure and it’s foundation. The internal debate over who is responsible for this issue has reportedly contributed to it being a static figure.
August 4, 2014: WDWMagic.com user tikiman (of Tikimanpages.com) is reporting that Expedition Everest is expected to undergo a lengthy refurbishment, during which the Yeti will be fixed. The time frame is unknown. User wdw71fan has reported that it will take place in Fiscal Year 2015 which begins on October 1st.
June 4, 2014: WDWMagic.com has reported that exterior refurbishment work is taking place on the backside of Expedition Everest. Recently, the “Bird on a stick” effect above the broken section of track was repaired and currently the broken section of track has been removed. It is anticipated that this broken section of track will return but any additional refurbishment work is unknown. There has been no public explanation for this work.
August 11, 2013: WDWThemeParks.com is reporting that Imagineer Joe Rohde said, “I will fix the yeti.” This was said during the Craft of Creativity presentation at the 2013 D23 Expo. Rohde went on to explain the complexities associated with the Yeti.
February 20, 2013: WDWThemeParks reported that there is a rumored plan to replace the current Yeti with a new version. The new version would presumably be designed by Garner Holt, would be lighter, and would be part marionette/part animatronic. Given that this is unlikely prior to 2017, and would require up to a year of downtime, this plan is largely subject to change.
