Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort to Undergo Moana Inspired Refurbishment

    Disney has officially announced that the re-opening of Disney’s Polynesian Resort will be delayed until July 2021. Disney has advised travel agents that the resort will undergo a refurbishment to guest rooms and the Great Ceremonial House beginning in October. The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that changes to the rooms will include a Pacific Ocean-inspired color palette as well as details, patterns and textures from Disney’s “Moana.”

    • Beginning September 28th the front desk will be relocated to a temporary area in the Pago Pago building.
    • The monorail station will close November 2nd and is expected to remain closed until mid-July 2021
    • Kona Cafe, Moana Mercantile, Tambu Lounge, and Pineapple Lanai will modify their operational hours beginning October 4th but will remain open during the refurbishment.
    • The villas and bungalows will remain open during the refurbishment while the main hotel will be closed.

    RUMOR TIMELINE

    September 24, 2020: The Disney Parks Blog shared additional details as well as a new piece of concept art for the imminent refurbishment to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.

    Announced changes include the following:

    • A new porte cochere entrance will showcase the iconic mid-20th century architecture. The new entry will feature a high-pitched, open-truss roof covered in a thatch style. The color scheme will also complement the Longhouses found throughout the resort.
    • At the monorail platform, new wooden screens will be covered with geometric patterns in bright, tropical colors.
    • Enhancements will be made to the gardens and fountains.
    • The entryway will feature dramatic lighting elements, including chandeliers inspired by glass floats, fishing nets and oversized bamboo elements. The new chandeliers will match the existing grand chandelier in the resort lobby, artfully bridging interior and exterior spaces.
    • All of the resort rooms will also be redone.

    September 22, 2020: WDWMagic.com is reporting that the monorail will remain closed until mid-July 2021 and will likely re-open with the refurbished resort.
