    Bongos Cuban Cafe closed in early 2019 to make way for a new restaurant called Beatrix. Construction on the restaurant was delayed indefinitely upon the COVID-19 shutdown and it is unknown if it will continue. A permit was filed in April of 2021 with an expiration date of April 2023, but other reports indicate that the project may be over. We are considering the project Blue Sky at this point.

    The details below were the original details on the project will continue at some point:

    The restaurant group, Lettuce Entertain You is planning on replacing Bongos with their Beatrix Market concept. The concept offers soup, salads and sandwiches in a quick service setting and currently has a location in Chicago.

    Per the Disney Parks Blog:

    Beatrix is your neighborhood restaurant, coffeehouse and grab-and-go market featuring healthy food options including vegetarian, gluten-free, and vegan along with fresh-squeezed juice cocktails. The restaurant will also offer a bakery and full-service bar with a selection of all-American beer and wine.

    RUMOR TIMELINE

    April 24, 2021: A new permit was filed this week indicating that work will commence by Beatrix Orlando LLC. The permit has an expiration date of 4/15/2023

    April 20, 2021: Multiple sites are reporting that the development of Beatrix market at Disney Springs is now dead. No replacement has been named for the site.

    July 27, 2020: BlogMickey.com is reporting that construction on Beatrix at Disney Springs has been delayed with no set date to begin again. The parent company Lettuce Entertain You would not state that the project has been cancelled.

    May 5, 2020: On Disney’s Quarter 2 Fiscal Year 2020 earnings call, Disney Chief Financial Officer Christine McCarthy stated the company’s plans to reduce capital expenditures during the Covid-19 pandemic. McCarthy stated that capital expenditures for the parks and resorts would be reduced by $900 million by way of pausing refurbishment and construction projects.

    Details of specific projects that may be subject to delay or cancellation were not stated, but construction on all ongoing Walt Disney World projects was suspended shortly after the park closure in March.

    The Beatrix Market is not expected to be cancelled but it will be delayed.

    October 30, 2019: Construction walls have been put up around Bongos and WDWMagic.com has posted photos.

    August 7, 2019: The Disney Parks Blog confirmed that Beatrix, a new restaurant by the Chicago Based, Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises will soon debut at Disney Springs West Side.

    The blog describes the restaurant as follows:

    May 6, 2019: WDWMagic.com is reporting that Bongos will be closing later this year.

    October 14, 2018: On Episode 183 of the Disney Dish Podcast, Jim Hill and Len Testa discussed the replacement for Bongos Cuban Cafe. The restaurant group, Lettuce Entertain You is planning on replacing Bongos with their Beatrix Market concept.
