The Streets of America had their last day of operation on April 2nd, 2016. While both the Muppets Courtyard and Commissary Lane remained after that day, the Streets of America name was removed from the website and park maps. The closure was done to facilitate new Star Wars and Toy Story related construction.
The Streets of America evolved since the park opened in 1989. Originally, the Streets of America were only accessible via the Studio Backlot Tour and during the Osborne Festival of Dancing Lights. The Backlot was combined in with the Streets of America and it included residential street, a collection of facades of classic television and movie houses. Residential Street was demolished to make way for the opening of Lights, Motors, Action in 2005.
Part of the Streets of America included Commissary Lane, a small street that extends from behind the American Idol Experience (Echo Lake) into the main drag for the Streets of America. Commissary Lane includes the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater table service restaurant, the ABC Commissary counter service restaurant, and The Writer’s Stop bakery and shop.
The attraction highlights of the Streets of America included Muppet*Vision 3-D, the Studio Backlot Tour, Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show, and The American Film Institute Showcase. The entire location was also home to the seasonal event: The Osborne Spectacle of Dancing Lights.
Other entertainment options included the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure and Mulch Sweat and Shears. Additional seasonal events were played at the Premier Theater including elements of the Star Wars Weekends and the Comedy Warehouse Holiday Special.
In addition to the dining on Commissary Lane, guests could also dine at Mama Melrose’s Ristorante, Pizza Planet or the Studio Catering Co. A selection of quick service locations were also available.
Shopping in the area included smaller stands as well as the It’s a Wonderful Shop specializing in Christmas items, the Stage 1 Company Store and the AFI Showcase Shop.
A selection of Meet and Greets could also be found in the Streets of America including characters from Phineas and Ferb, Cars, and Monster’s Inc.
Thematically, the area was designed to look like a movie set and the building facades highlight elements from New York, San Francisco and other cities in the United States.
On April 2, 2016 many attractions and areas of the Streets of America closed. While other areas closed earlier this was the largest change. All that remained open was the Muppet Courtyard area and Commissary Lane.
