Discovery Island

Discovery Island represents the hub of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. After guests walk through the Oasis and cross the bridge, they are surrounded by Discovery Island. Guests can find shopping and dining throughout Discovery Island as well as Animal viewing and the “It’s Tough to be a Bug” 3D show. The centerpiece of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Discovery Island is the Tree of Life, an iconic structure with animals carved into the bark and roots.

In the animal trails on Discovery Island, guests can find Macaws, Giant Galapagois Tortoises, Red Kangaroos, Asian-Small Clawed Otters, Lesser Flamingoes, Paroon Shark Catfish, Lemurs, Tamarins and more.

Dining options include Pizzafari, Flame Tree BBQ and many snack stands. For merchandise, guests can visit the two large shops: Island Mercantile or Disney Outfitters as well as a variety of smaller kiosks as well.

Five other lands connect to Discovery Island: Africa, Asia, Camp Minnie Mickey, Dinoland USA, and the Oasis.

The theming of Discovery Island is unique and is inspired by the bright colors of the Caribbean. Many fixtures are based on the Oaxacan carved animals of Mexico.

The dining locations all feature carnivore animal carvings while the merchandise locations all feature herbivore animal carvings.

Discovery Island was originally known as Safari Village before being renamed in December 2000.
