E - Headliner/Super Headliner

Fantasmic! is a nighttime spectacular that takes guests into the imagination of Mickey Mouse in his role as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice in Fantasia. The show uses fireworks, fire, laser and water effects combined with characters from classic Disney movies in a sensory filled battle of good versus evil.

The underlying story of Fantasmic! is a classic good versus evil battle. Mickey Mouse and the hero characters are good while the villain characters are bad. The story of good and evil is told inside Mickey’s imagination as he tries to overpower the evil forces that enter his dream.

The show is set in the Hollywood Hills Amphitheater where guests look down on a lagoon that surrounds a large mountain.

A voiceover at the start of the show explains how powerful the imagination can be:

Welcome to Fantasmic! Tonight our friendly host Mickey Mouse uses his vivid imagination to create magical imagery for all to enjoy. Nothing is more wonderful than the imagination, for in a moment you can experience a beautiful fantasy or an exciting adventure. But beware, nothing is more powerful than the imagination, for it can also expand your greatest fears into an overwhelming nightmare.

Are the powers of Mickey’s incredible imagination strong enough and bright enough to withstand the evil forces that invade Mickey’s dream? You are about to find out. For we now invite you to join Mickey and experience Fantasmic! A journey beyond your wildest imagination.

Song lyrics (In Italics below) help set the mood. The music slowly swells and the lights dim as spotlights light the center of the mountain stage.

Imagination! (Echo) Imagination!

Additional strobe lights, spotlights and lasers flash on the stage and pan the audience.

Dream a fantastic Dream!

The spotlights all turn towards the stage where Mickey Mouse appears, launching into the Fantasmic! orchestral theme song. He acts as a conductor prompting water effects in the lagoon in front of him. Fountains rise and fall at Mickey’s gestures. Mickey makes his way up to the second level of the stage where he shoots sparks/fireworks from his hands.

With an additional wave of his hands, he creates large mist screens on the lagoon where images of Mickey as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice appear. A female singer helps transition between scenes with the lyrics of Fantasmic!

See it in your mind,
And you can find,

In your imagination,
Mysteries and magic,
Visions fantastic,
Leading to strange and wondrous dreams.

Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey (on the mist screen) continues the hand gestures to manipulate the water before giving way to imagery of flowers on the mist screen and the stage.

The mist screen disappears as the flowers transition into jungle sounds as black light animal figures fill the stage. Animals include ostriches, elephants, giraffes and rhinos. Rafiki from the Lion King and other monkeys float by on large floats in front of the stage as an instrumental version of “I Just Can’t Wait to be King” leads into the mist screens reappearing with a young Simba from the Lion King dancing.

Simba kicks off a montage of music from classic Disney movies. Scenes from these movies play in water bubbles that “float” upwards on the mist screens. This segment was modified over the years, but currently includes:

  • The Lion King
  • The Jungle Book
  • Dumbo
  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Hercules
  • Pinocchio
  • Aladdin
  • Mulan
  • Cinderella
  • Lady and the Tramp
  • Tangled
  • The Princess and the Frog
  • Bambi
  • Beauty and the Beast
  • The Little Mermaid
  • Frozen

The musical segment concludes with Jiminy Cricket from Pinocchio in a bubble that fills with water. Ominous music plays as Monstro the Whale breaches on the mist screen causing a large splash of water in the lagoon. The scene cuts to Sorcerer Mickey struggling in the water crying for help before falling down a water cyclone. Mickey’s eyes appear on the mist screen and he asks, “Hey, What’s going on?”

A ship appears on the screen followed quickly be a cannon blast from the stage. The mist screen disappears revealing Governor Ratcliffe and the settlers from Pocahontas. Governor Ratcliffe takes the British Flag and proudly proclaims:

I hereby claim this land in the name of his majesty King James I!

The lights dim on the stage as canoes with Pocahontas and other Native Americans paddle across the lagoon, lit only by torches. The action shifts between the stage and mist screens as the music plays songs from Pocahontas. A war between the settlers and the Native Americans is highlighted by a shot from the top of the mountain as the two groups battle. Ultimately, John Smith and Pocahontas appear at the top of the mountain to stop the fight as the music transitions into “Colors of the Wind”.

The female singer returns with more lyrics from Fantasmic! as Princes and Princesses appear on the mist screens

See it in your mind,
And you can find,
In your imagination,
Tales of enchantment,
Beauty and romance,
Happily ever after!

The large floats return to the lagoon featuring various Princes and Princesses as they pass by, music from their respective movies introduces the floats.

  • Belle and The Beast from Beauty and the Beast
  • Ariel and Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid
  • Snow White and The Prince from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Immediately following the large floats the music becomes ominous once again as the Evil Queen from Snow White appears on stage. She calls upon the Magic Mirror (appearing on the mist screen) and he tells her, “In Mickey’s imagination, beauty and love will always supplieth”. Upset, the Evil Queen casts a spell to turn herself into the Old Hag. She calls upon all of the forces of evil before the Magic Mirror tells her she has the power to control his mind. As the Magic Mirror tells her this, the image on the screen transforms into the Old Hag. The faces continue to change through the different Disney Villains called upon by the old hag:

  • Old Hag – Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
  • Ursula – The Little Mermaid
  • Cruella de Vil – 101 Dalmatians
  • Scar – The Lion King
  • Frollo – The Hunchback of Notre Dame
  • Jafar – Aladdin

Jafar proclaims, “It’s time to say goodbye to Mickey! Enter the Cave of Wonders”. The screen shows Mickey on the Magic Carpet flying through the Cave of Wonders followed by Jafar proclaiming, “Now you’ll see how snakelike I can be!” The screens disappear as a large snake appears on stage weaving around Mickey Mouse. Mickey comes across a magic lamp, which he rubs, only to release the Genie version of Jafar. On the mist screen, Jafar transforms into Hades (Hercules) who then transforms into Chernabog (Fantasia) as the music from “Night on Bald Mountain” plays.

The screens disappear to reveal Mickey and Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty). Maleficent proclaims, “Now you will deal with me and all the powers of my imagination!”

A frightened Mickey runs before all the villains once again appear on the mist screen before a large dragon fills the stage. The dragon’s fire breath covers the lagoon turning into a lake of fire.

Mickey appears dressed as Arthur from the Sword in the Stone and interjects, “You may think you’re so powerful. Well, this is my dream!” He waves his hands to bring up the fountains once again before finding the sword in a rock on stage. He’s able to triumphantly remove the sword and he points it at the dragon. Sparks and fireworks shoot from the edge of the sword and then Mickey uses the sword to defeat each villain that appears on the mist screen.

All the villains are defeated following a flash of fireworks. Strobe lights fill the theater as Tinkerbell flies onto the mist screen. The music returns to the Fantasmic! theme as a large boat appears from behind the mountain. Fireworks are shooting down from the side of the boat as it moves into view. As the Fantasmic! theme crescendos there’s a flash of fireworks at the top of the boat and Mickey appears as Steamboat Willie. Dozens of characters appear on the ship dancing and waving ribbons as the Fantasmic! theme is sung:

See it in your mind,
And you will find,
In your imagination,
Mysteries and magic,
Visions fantastic,
Leading to strange and wondrous dreams!

Dreams are make believe,
But could they all come true?

In your imagination!

In your imagination!

Here in your mind,
It’s magic you’ll find.
When out of the night,
Dark forces ignite,
To blind you with frightening speed,
You use your might,
To brighten the light,
Creating a night of wondrous deeds!

As the boat leaves, the lagoon fills with fountains, fireworks and fire effects. As the lyrics end, a large fireworks blast at the top of stage reveals Sorcerer Mickey as lasers light up the mountain. Mickey waves his arms launching fireworks and fountains all over the amphitheater. Another fireworks blast causes Sorcerer Mickey to disappear and Tuxedo Mickey to appear on the bottom of the stage where he proudly proclaims, “Some imagination, huh?” Tuxedo Mickey disappears in another burst of fireworks and one final burst of fireworks ends the show.
