D23 Expo August 9, 2013 – My Magic + and Fastpass+

As part of the Imagineering Pavilion at the 2013 D23 Expo, there was an exhibit where the My Magic + and Fastpass+ programs were being explained by Disney employees. I had the privilege of speaking with a Disney employee named Robert for over 20 minutes about the Fastpass+ program.

Disney would not allow any of these cast members to be filmed/interviewed as this product is still in testing mode. While much of the information given has already been established there were a few other pieces of information that were learned.

  • When asked about availability of same day Fastpass for high demand attractions, it was established that this is a concern. However, it was also explained that the system as currently set up is a first come, first serve system.
  • At this time, there will be no Fastpasses held back for same day availability.
  • Fastpasses for stage shows are not currently "preferred viewing", however that is still being reviewed.
  • If a guest misses their Fastpass window, they will not receive another Fastpass.
  • Guests are able to select individual attractions and change the Fastpass return time for a specific attraction.
  • For guests getting same day Fastpasses, they will have access to book Fastpasses for later in the day, not just the next available Fastpass
  • The initial rollout is planned for 3 Fastpasses per guest per day, including the Magic Kingdom
  • It is expected that Fastpass+ will be in place by the end of the year.
  • There is no plan to adjust the Fastpass return window.
  • There was not a definitive answer regarding the concern about Fastpass+ affecting Park Hopping
  • The Magic Bands for a group of people will not be linked for the purposes of Fastpass+. This means that if the group has four Fastpass+ reservations for each of Peter Pan's Flight and Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid, but only two for Space Mountain and two for The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, the appropriate Magic Band needs to be in line for Space Mountain or Winnie the Pooh in order to gain access to the system.
  • If a guest enters the Fastpass+ line for one attraction, but they are actually set up with another attraction, the cast member will be able to alert them of an open Fastpass+ window.
  • I asked about clip on watch face attachments for the Magic Band and was informed that it was a frequently asked question and something that was being looked into.

Speaking personally, I told Robert that I loved the idea of being able to walk into Epcot, get in a 5 minute line for Spaceship Earth, and while in line book a Soarin' Fastpass+ reservation and a dining reservation. However, I fear that the reality will be an inflated wait time at Spaceship Earth and no Soarin' or dining availability. Robert, did empathize with the Dining program, and stated that it's something they are looking to avoid. When asked if the number of Fastpass+ reservations would or could be adjust up or down, it was explained that the system is very flexible, and if guests are unsatisfied with the current set up it would likely be adjusted. I expect to follow up in this pavilion with additional questions.
