D23 Expo August 10, 2013 – General Overview


Today's activities were less focused on the theme parks and included the following presentations:

  • Let the Adventures Begin (Live Action Studios Arena Presentation)
  • Disney Legends Ceremony (Arena Presentation)
  • Crash Course in the Force (Star Wars Presentation)

Let the Adventures Begin

The live action studios presentation started off the day highlighting the upcoming pictures under the Disney umbrella. There was no new information on Star Wars given at this presentation, but clips were shown for the following movies:

  • Thor: The Dark World
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Avengers Age of Ultron
  • Bears
  • Muppets Most Wanted
  • Into the Woods
  • Cinderella
  • Maleficent
  • Tomorrowland
  • Saving Mr. Banks

When head of the studio, Alan Horne announced that there would be no Star Wars announcements there were very audible boos in the arena. Actors in attendance were as follows: Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Ty Burrell, Angelina Jolie, B.J. Novak, and Jason Schwartzman. The shoe ended with B.J. Novak and Jason Schwartzman at a piano playing, "Let's Go Fly a Kite". They were joined by Richard Sherman joining the duo and a team of people running into the arena with kites.

Disney Legends Ceremony

The Disney Legends Ceremony was hosted by Tom Bergeron and Bob Iger, and it celebrated the careers of the following individuals:

  • Billy Crystal
  • John Goodman
  • Steve Jobs
  • Dick Clark
  • Tony Baxter
  • Collin Campbell
  • Glen Keane
  • Ed Wynn

A Crash Course in the Force

This panel was largely a review of the history of the Star Wars universe by presenter Pablo Hidalgo. Hidalgo did say that Star Tours is only the beginning of Star Wars attractions in the parks, but would not elaborate during the follow up Question and Answer period.
