Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid takes guests through the story and the music of the classic Disney movie, The Little Mermaid. As one of the centerpiece attractions of New Fantasyland, Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid is a clone of the Disney California Adventure attraction, The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Undersea Adventure. The ride’s themselves are virtually identical, but the exterior and queue are very different.

The ride takes you through the story of The Little Mermaid through the songs from the movie.

The story begins as guest’s walk through the caves and rock work that lead to the beach front Castle of Prince Eric. Once guests have boarded their vehicle Scuttle the Seagull introduces them to the story as one of his favorites.

After the introduction by Scuttle, our clamshells descend “under water” through the use of a projection effect on the back of our clamshells and surrounding area. While in the descent Ariel first appears on a screen swimming around with Flounder and guests can begin to hear her singing “Part of Your World”. The vehicles descend through the rocks to find an animatronic Ariel and Flounder surrounded by all her stuff and continuing the song. Amongst the items included is a statue of Prince Eric striking a pose.

The vehicles transition into the largest show scene where Sebastian is leading a chorus of fish in a rendition of “Under the Sea”. There is a lot of movement in this scene with various levels of animatronics including a complex Sebastian as well as an additional Ariel animatronic. All of the fish are dancing along to the music before it transitions into the next scene.

The next scene features Flotsam and Jetsam at the entrance to Ursula’s Lair, the vehicles continue into the scene as an animatronic Ursula sings “Poor Unfortunate Souls”. The Ursula animatronic is the largest in the attraction and during her song she is casting the spell that takes Ariel’s voice and makes her human.

The next transition scene is another projection, this time it’s Ariel getting her legs. This moves into a scene with an animatronic Ariel and Prince Eric sitting in a boat as Sebastian serenades them with a chorus of “Kiss the Girl”. Several other animals are dancing around the boat as the animatronics approach for a kiss and then back away.

The next scene features an image of Ursula dying in the background and silhouettes of Ariel and Prince Eric kissing while a heart is drawn around them.

The final scene features fireworks, fish dancing, Sebastian, Triton, Ariel and Prince Eric celebrating at the wedding.

The ride wraps with Scuttle explaining how they all live happily ever after.

Take a slow moving clamshell vehicle under the sea to visit Ariel and her friends in a musical retelling of the classic tale.

This attraction opens with the park.

Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid is one of the low to mid range demand Fastpass+ reservations in the park. Availability will exist well into the day, but guests can save time using Fastpass+ at this location.

The highly detailed queue for this attraction features intricate rockwork, waterfalls, and hidden references to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. In the indoor portion of the queue, guests can experience an interactive game called Scuttle’s Scavenger Hunt. In the game, guests will interact with projected crabs. The crabs bring out different items and it’s the guests responsibility to identify which of the items doesn’t belong.

A sign inside the queue explains the premise behind the game:

Dear Friends –

A storm mixed up our human stuff! The crabs need your help cleaning up. If a crab brings out something that doesn’t match the stuff around it – Just point at it and the crab will take it away.

The crabs exist throughout the queue as they play and interact amongst some of the items that Ariel has accumulated. Towards the end of the standby queue, an interactive Scuttle speaks with guests, and later on the attraction a similar Scuttle animatronic will “recognize” these guests from the queue.

A mural at the load/unload area features Ariel sitting on a rock along the water peering off at a ship in the background.

The vehicles seat 2-3 guests (2 adults or 1 adult and two children). They are designed to look like clamshells and operate in an Omnimover ride system.

There are multiple attractions in the parks that use a varient of the omnimover ride system including:

  • The Haunted Mansion
  • Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin
  • The Seas with Nemo and Friends
  • Spaceship Earth

The most common comparison is The Seas with Nemo and Friends, however Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid has more complex show elements.
