Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is an interactive ride, where guests use their laser blasters to help Buzz Lightyear battle the evil Emperor Zurg.

The slow moving spaceships travel through a variety of scenes. Guests earn points and compete against each other by shooting at targets with their laser blasters.

The attraction is setup as a recruitment facility for new Space Rangers to fight against the Evil Emperor Zurg. The backstory is partially outlined in the queue where guests learn that they are currently on the Star Command Planet and will soon be embarking on a secret mission to Planet Z.

Guests can use the “Spin Control” joystick to rotate their vehicle throughout most of the attraction. Additionally, guests can compete against each other by using their “Laser Blasters” to shoot at targets. The targets are all identified with the Evil Emperor Zurg’s “Z” inside a circular logo. Targets are worth different amounts and some of the higher valued targets are identified in our Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Strategy Guide.

As guests board their Space Cruisers and enter the first room, two separate messages play overhead from Buzz Lightyear. The messages explain the mission, how the laser cannons work and advise guests that the vehicle spin control is now active:

The thumb trigger on your laser cannon fires a single ion pulse
You’ve got to hit Zurg’s forces where it counts
Z marks the spot.

Standby to disengage autopilot
You’ve got the stick Space Rangers
Set Course for Planet Z

This briefing room is very dark and features a disco ball in the center. The track travels around it before entering the main part of the attraction.

Once guests enter the next room they can see two large robot figures. The robot on the ride side features a rotating saw blade as one of his hands. The robot on the left hand side is called Boxobot. Several other props can be seen in this room like Crystolic Fusion Power Cells (batteries) and space ships. This room, and all other rooms in the attraction use black lights to highlight the sets.

The next room is the largest in the attraction and features several alien type figures as well as a large volcano on the back wall. Most of the activity is on the right side of the vehicle’s forward motion but there are targets on the left side as well. Little Green Aliens can be found in this scene as well as others in the attraction.

Following the larger seen are two smaller scenes opposite each other. On the left side, a robot with several Crystolic Fusion Power Cells stands alongside Little Green Aliens. Opposite this, on the right side, the Evil Emperor Zurg is sitting in his spaceship threatening us as we pass by. Little Green Aliens can also be seen behind Zurg.

Some of Zurg’s threats include:

Intruders! Guards seize them, and their little green friends too!

Too late Space Rangers. Prepare to face the full power of my secret weapon!

Fools what have you done? Reconnect the fusion cells. Power I must have power!

The space cruisers then travel into a speed tunnel known as the “Emergency Escape Hatch”. The battle continues all around the vehicle but there are no targets in the tunnel.

Once the Space Cruisers emerge from the tunnel guests are once again faced with Zurg. He is attempting to intimidate us as Buzz Lightyear is giving direction. The ability for guests to rotate their vehicles is deactivated and the vehicles orient themselves facing the Evil Emperor Zurg.

Buzz Lightyear: Space Rangers, concentrate your fire power on Zurg’s secret weapon.
Evil Emperor Zurg: Help! Stop that! I’m indestructible do you here? Indestructible!

Buzz Lightyear: Green squadron, secure the power cells for transport
Evil Emperor Zurg: Ah! Miserable do-gooders pint sized pipsqueaks

The Little Green Aliens appear on a small tunnel leading to the final scene where Zurg can be seen dangling from the claw as Buzz Lightyear salutes the ship. A final exchange can be heard between Zurg and Buzz:

Buzz Lightyear: Good shooting Space Rangers, Green squadron destroy Zurg’s secret weapon
Evil Emperor Zurg: Ah! My secret weapon… ruined!
Buzz Lightyear: We’ve got Zurg on the run, blast him with everything you’ve got.
Evil Emperor Zurg: Ouch that stings!
Buzz Lightyear: Never mess around with Star Command Zurg
Evil Emperor Zurg: I am invincible do you hear me? Invincible!

Just before exiting, Buzz Lightyear tells guests to see how they scored in the attraction:

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Strategy Guide

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is an interactive adventure in which you travel aboard slow-moving spaceships that you can spin while helping Buzz Lightyear battle the evil Emperor Zurg.

Children, fans of Toy Story, competitive guests

This attraction opens with the park.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is one of the low to mid range demand Fastpass+ reservations in the park. Availability will exist well into the day, but guests can save time using Fastpass+ at this location.

The marquee outside the attraction reads, “Star Command Headquarters” while the facade for the attraction reads Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. Upon entering the indoor queue, a large mural reads:

Star Command
Home Of The
Universe Protection Unit

Buzz Lightyear can be scene flying through the air on the mural.

The queue then transitions into a room with switchbacks and additional murals on the wall. It is at this point where guests have shrunk down to the size of a toy. One such mural shows the, “Planets of the Galactic Alliance”. This mural notifies guests that they are on the Star Command Planet and will soon be embarking on a secret mission to Planet Z.

The queue murals in the switchback room shows painted cables all connecting to Crystolic Fusion Power Cells (Batteries). The queue continues beneath several blinking red lights where several instrument panels show details of the various planets around Star Command. An animatronic Buzz Lightyear can be seen ahead, narrating our mission.

A large View-Master toy can be seen next to Buzz Lightyear, displaying a variety of space related images. Buzz Lightyear’s narration is the following 1 minute loop:

Scanners detecting more trouble in sector 9.
No doubt it’s the work of that nefarious criminal, the sworn enemy of the galactic alliance, the evil Emperor Zurg. His robotic army is stealing crystolic fusion power cells. Without those cells we’ll all be powerless and at the mercy of Zurg.
Star Command picked a fine time to send the new recruits.
All right, you junior space rangers, listen up!
The green squadron will retrieve the power cells, while the rest of you concentrate on those robots.
You’ll rendezvous at Planet Z.
I will remain here at Star Command to coordinate the mission.
Battle stations, report to the flight deck for immediate launch! To infinity and beyond!

Before boarding, guests pass by a large Magna Doodle toy that features an illustration of the Jr. Cadet training vehicle, the XP-37 Space Cruiser vehicle. It highlights several features including:

  • Spin Toggles (360 degree Spin)
  • Twin Ion Cannons
  • Crystolic Fusion Power Unit

The omnimover vehicles are themed as space ships known as “XP-37 Space Cruisers”. The bright green, blue, and orange space cruisers sit 2-3 guests each, and are equipped with two “laser blasters” and a joystick.

The laser blasters are used throughout the ride and are activated after the first scene. They are also anchored to the top of the ride vehicle and have a limited range of vertical and horizontal motion. Next to the laser blasters are red digital read outs for each guest that shows that guest’s score.

The joystick allows the vehicle to rotate 360 degrees throughout most of the attraction.

The attraction space has been used since 1972. The previous attraction’s in this space are as follows:

  • If You Had Wings: June 5, 1972 – June 1, 1987
  • If You Could Fly: June 6, 1987 – January 3, 1989
  • Delta Dreamflight: June 6, 1989 – December 31, 1995
  • Dreamflight: January 1, 1996 – June 1996
  • Take Flight: June 1996 – January 5, 1998

As a shooting game, the attraction is similar to Toy Story Mania, but it has dimensional sets. The ride system is an omnimover similar to The Haunted Mansion, Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid and other similar attractions throughout Walt Disney World.
