Initially, Flamingo Crossings was intended to be a continuation of Downtown Disney with lower rent stores and hotels. A now defunct website (www.flamingocrossingsfl.com) had information on the original project.
GrowthSpotter.com is reporting that additional development in the area will include 29 retail stores and restaurants across the 45 acre space. Housing for Walt Disney World Interns is also planned for this area. Construction is expected to begin in Summer of 2018. In addition, 1300 apartments are also expected to be part of this project.
As part of this expansion, a new four lane road is expected to be constructed between Western Way and Route 545. This area is located North West of Disney's Animal Kingdom on the Western edge of Disney World property.
May 7, 2019: WDWMagic.com is reporting that the Western Way extension is now open. This road connects the existing Western Way at Flamingo Crossings, just beyond the intersection with SR 429, and will pass through Flamingo Crossings, connecting to Avalon Road 545.
February 13, 2019: WDWMagic.com user danlb_2000 is reporting that Disney has filed a Notice of Commencement with the South Florida Water Management District on the Flamingo Crossings Housing.
December 6, 2018: Disney and the American Campus Communities celebrated the groundbreaking of future housing for the Internship program along the Flamingo Crossings property.
October 1, 2018: WDWMagic.com user danlb_2000 is reporting that Disney has filed a Notice of Commencement with the South Florida Water Management District for the Flamingo Crossings Housing project.
June 12, 2018: Disney filed permits with the State of Florida for four new hotels and a parking garage on the Flamingo Crossings Site. BlogMickey.com posted images of the permits which specify the following hotels will be represented:
- Residence Inn
- Fairfield Inn
- Homewood Suites
- Home2 Suites
April 6, 2018: The Crossroads Plaza across from Walt Disney World will soon be closing and demolished to make way for an interchange at State Road 535. This project is expected to allow for better access to Disney property. WDWMagic.com has posted a map of the likely changes.
March 19, 2018: BizJournals.com shared concept art of new apartments going to the Flamingo Crossings site. The site is expected to have 1300 apartments in four story buildings.
August 29, 2017: WDWMagic.com and GrowthSpotter.com (behind pay wall) are reporting that additional development in the area will include 29 retail stores and restaurants across the 45 acre space. Construction is expected to begin in Summer of 2018.
August 24, 2016: WDWMagic.com user danlb_2000 is reporting that a permit has been filed with the South Florida Water Management district to construct a new four lane road connecting the Western Way with Route 545. This would create a new road directly to this hotel area. This area is North West of Disney's Animal Kingdom on the edge of Disney World property.
February 9, 2016: WDWMagic.com is reporting that SpringHill Suites and TownePlace Suites will officially open on February 12, 2016.
May 21, 2015: The Orlando Sentinel reported that a topping off ceremony has taken place at the first of two hotels.
October 26, 2014: At a TouringPlans sponsored event in New Jersey as well as on the TouringPlans Twitter feed, Jim Hill reported that further development is coming to the Flamingo Crossings site. This would include additional hotels, retail and dining, but not a 5th gate.
October 16, 2014: The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that a total of seven hotels will be built on the Flamingo Crossings site. The information came at the ground breaking at the first two hotels and came from the developer John Rubini. Rubini explained that he expects to build a total of seven hotels in the next 5 years.
