At the 2017 D23 Expo, Disney officially confirmed that a new ride called Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway is coming to Disney's Hollywood Studios. While not mentioned in the presentation, the new attraction will replace The Great Movie Ride which will have it's last day of operation on August 13, 2017.
The new attraction is being designed by Imagineer Kevin Rafferty and will feature a new attraction theme song in a "state-of"the-art-ride-through attraction". The ride promises to "take guests on a journey inside the wacky and unpredictable world of Disney Channel’s Emmy Award-winning “Mickey Mouse” cartoon shorts using new technologies that transform the flat cartoon world into an incredible dimensional experience."
The attraction was described by Rafferty as being, "2 1/2-D" a version of 3-D that would not require glasses. Rafferty also showcased a test sequence of one of the transition effects that was in an earlier version of the attraction. The scene in question has walls that are over 30 feet and the effect in the below video was described as a "test" and not necessarily the final product that will be in the attraction.
