About

The Enchanted Tiki Room - Under New Management was a replacement to the opening day attraction, The Enchanted Tiki Room - Tropical Serenade. The attraction paid brief homage to it's predecessor before the new hosts Zazu (from the Lion King) and Iago (from Aladdin) take over. Together Zazu and Iago join the former cast headlined by Jose, Michael, Pierre and Fritz.

There are many moving parts in the wholly immersive theater that range from singing birds to lightening effects, and chanting totem polls to water effects.

While there are some moments that may frighten young children, for the most part this is a very uplifting show. Guests are often encouraged to sing and dance along with the music.

Location

Located next to the Sunshine Tree Terrace across from the steps that lead to the Jungle Cruise

Appeals To

While some of the darker parts may scare children, most children under the age of 10 enjoy the attraction.

Times Guide – Opening/Closing

This attraction opens 1 hour after parking opening, and closed 1 to 3 hours prior to park closing.

Pre-show Notes

Guests enter the pre-show area to see a hut with a small waterfall. As the pre-show begins, a door of the hut opens and we see the first birds in the attraction, William (Don Rickles) and Morris (Phil Hartman). After some bird related puns (grousing, Big Bird, etc), William and Morris set up the premise that they represent the two new birds that are joining the Tiki Room. The bickering continues, and as the doors close they try to one up each other over who has the better clientele. Morris claims he just signed Donald Duck while William claims he just signed former Disney property and NHL Team, The Mighty Ducks.

The doors close to the hut while guests move away from the pre-show area and into the theater. William and Morris continue their fighting even after the doors close.

Story

Most of the original cast returns to The Enchanted Tiki Room in the Under New Management version of the show. It begins the same way as it's predecessor Tropical Serenade with animatronic birds Jose, Michael, Pierre and Fritz starting the show. However they are quickly interrupted by Iago (Gilbert Gottfried) and Zazu (Michael Gough). From this point the show is entirely different from the previous incarnation.

Much of the criticism of Under New Management stems from negativity around the Iago character. Iago pointedly tells members of the original cast that their songs are old and they need to appeal to a hipper crowd, while Zazu sides with the original cast.

Iago then takes the helm by singing Friend Like Me from Aladdin, but this change in the show has upset the Tiki Gods. The Tiki Gods show themselves through the totem polls around the show space, and start chanting for The Tiki Goddess of Disaster, "Uh-Oa!" Uh-Oa! emerges in the center of the attraction and demands to know who has disrupted the Tiki Room. Iago is quickly identified as the culprit, and Uh-Oa! curses Iago. Iago is first affixed to his perch by Uh-Oa and then she makes him disappear.

After Iago disappears, the Tiki Poles begin singing "In the Still of the Night" to be followed by flowers singing new versions of songs from the original Tropical Serenade. After these songs, Iago emerges in a new location, burnt and with a crutch. He has changed his view and now views the Tiki Gods as the greatest act he's ever seen.

Zazu then chimes in with a reference to the Lion King, assuring Iago that everything will be Hakuna Matata before all the birds start singing "Conga". This is followed by the song "Get On Your Feet", and then an adaptation to "Heigh Ho" from Snow White as guests are exiting the theater. Iago continues to insult guests as they depart, and after most of the guests have departed he mentions that he's going to take a nap at the Hall of Presidents.

Fun Fact: Rowan Atkinson, best known as Mr. Bean was the original voice of Zazu the Hornbill in the Lion King movie. However he did not lend his voice talents to Under New Management. Instead Zazu is voiced by Michael Gough, a lesser known voice actor that has lent his voice to Disney in the past.

Technical Notes

Walt Disney came across a mechanical bird that he kept in his office in Burbank. He had some of his Imagineers reverse engineer the bird, and this launched many of the audio-animatronic attractions in the parks, including the original Enchanted Tiki Room in Disneyland. The original mechanical bird that was the inspiration still resides in the Disney archives.

  • Tropical Serenade closed on September 1, 1997

Similar Attractions

The intimate theater is a similar theater in the round setup like Stitch's Great Escape, however the Enchanted Tiki Room - Under New Management theater is much smaller.

While no show is really identical to this show, Under New Management has similar elements to the Country Bear Jamboree. Those elements include catchy music and animatronics in various spots around the theater.
