About

Pirates of the Caribbean is a Disney classic that has not only delighted theme park guests for decades, but has also inspired a successful series of major motion pictures. These movies have re-inspired the attraction as elements of the movies have found their way back into the ride.

After traveling through a Spanish fortress, guests board their boats where they'll travel through caves, down waterfalls, and along the river banks as the mischievous band of pirates guide them on their way. You'll see animatronics that range from the classic auctioneer and mayor in the well to new favorites Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Barbossa.

By the time you finish your journey you'll be singing the classic song "Yo Ho" written by none other than Disney Legend Xavier Atencio.

Queue Notes

Guests entire the attraction through a Spanish Fortress known as El Castillo - Torre del Sol. There are two sides to the queue each side offering different scenery.

Some of the queue elements include cannons and other weapons, while the most famous scene in the queue features two pirate skeletons playing chess in a perpetual stalemate.

Vehicle Description

The vehicles are flat bottomed boats that can accommodate 21-25 guests at once. They are 6 rows each with the front and back rows slightly shorter than the other rows. If you are tall, or have knee issues you may feel uncomfortable in these boats.

They have a boat equipped for wheelchairs that may accommodate guests with knee or leg issues as well.

Post-show Notes

After leaving your boat, guests must exit the attraction via a moving walkway. The walkway is painted every few steps with a Pirate boot and a peg leg.

Story

The attraction was originally conceived as a walking tour through various pirate themed dioramas. The story isn't as linear as other attractions, but this was loosely addressed after the 2006 refurbishment.

As the ride begins in the caves guests hear an ominous voice declaring, "Dead men tell no tales." Since the 2006 refurbishment, a projection would appear seemingly on a waterfall in the middle of the caves featuring either Davy Jones or Blackbeard from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

We continue to travel through the caves during a time period when the pirates no longer exist. As we pass through the waterfall projection we hear the sounds of mermaids. Previously mermaids were projected in the water but that effect has since been removed. Along the beach we see skeletons of former pirates as well as a mermaid.

It's not until guests go down the 14 foot waterfall and effectively travel back to the time of pillaging and plundering where we can see the pirates and their mayhem.

The first scene features cannon fire being exchanged between a fortress and a pirate ship that features a shouting Captain Barbosa animatronic. Captain Barbosa makes mention of Captain Jack Sparrow as well as shouting the classic line from the pre-2006 refurbishment of the attraction, "Fire at will!" Recent enhancements to this area also include a fog/mist over the water, the musical score from the movie, and powerful blasts of air coming from the cannons in the fortress.

As the boat turns the corner, guests witness they mayor of the town being dunked in a well in an effort to get him to talk. This is also the first sight of Captain Jack Sparrow as he's seen hiding just beyond the center of town.

The ride continues with pirate mayhem that includes Jack Sparrow hiding in a barrel while trying to get a look at a treasure map. The previous version of the ride featured a frightened woman in the barrel instead.

Additional scenes include a chase scene that originally featured pirates chasing women, but due to some political correctness complaints changes were made and now some women chase men.

Remaining unchanged is the classic wife auction scene where pirates are bidding for their new bride.

The climax of the ride comes when guests entire the largest show scene, featuring pirates singing the attractions theme song, "Yo Ho". The pirates have set the entire town ablaze and couldn't be prouder. They've pillaged, they've plundered, they've rifled and looted.

The next scene features several pirates in a jail cell trying to lure a mangy dog that has the keys to their freedom dangling from his mouth.

The ride ends with a satisfied Jack Sparrow sitting back in his "throne" amidst the treasure.

Technical Notes

The boats are propelled through the attraction by water pumps that create the flow of the "river".

Similar Attractions

The boats are similar to "it's a small world" and Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros. There is a small drop in the attraction that's comparable to some of the smaller drops on Splash Mountain.

From a fright factor, this attraction is comparable to Snow White's Scary Adventures.
