Times Guide – Opening/Closing

This location typically opens 30-60 minutes after park opening and typically closes at 4:30 PM - 5:00 PM.

The animals may go into their night houses earlier than the closing time for the park when there is an early sunset. On these days, refer to the time guide or in park signage for the closing time. Signage exists near Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail and Maharajah Jungle Trek indicating the closing time for those attractions. Most other animal enclosures will close at around the same time with the exception of Kilimanjaro Safaris which remains open later.

Queue Notes

The queue for the Wildlife Express Train is setup like an African railroad station. Signage features the Northbound stops on the left, Next Departing Train in the center and Southbound stops on the right of the facade. There is also a sign for a booking office along the right side.

A message from the Harambe Town Ministry is posted on the wall. It reads:

Notice

It is the right of railway travelers to receive the highest level of facilitation at this station.

No tips or perquisites should be tendered or accepted for inducing the performance of any service.

Corruption is prohibited by town ordinance and punishable by law in Harambe.

Vehicle Description

The Wildlife Express Trains are rustic diesel-hydraulic steam trains manufactured by the Severn Lamb company of Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom. The three locomotives each have a different color, red, black and green. The locomotives hitch to one of two sets of five rail cars.

The seating on the rail cars faces to the left relative to the forward motion of the train. Each five car train can accommodate 250 guests at a time.

The train is a 3 ft narrow gauge rail.

Story

The train ride from Harambe to Rafiki's Planet Watch is primarily a means of transporting guests to the Rafiki's Planet Watch section of the park. The trains themselves are made to resemble trains that would be in operation in Africa or Asia and have been weathered to showcase their age. The equivalent trains in Africa and Asia would be used for travel and these trains have luggage above the guest seating area to reflect this use.

The trip includes a behind the scenes look at Disney's Animal Kingdom en route to Rafiki's Planet Watch.

Guests can look out the left side of the train at the landscape that shows the park boundary. The beginning of the trip features large billboards that often advertise the latest Disney Nature film. Deeper into the trip, the train passes by the backstage areas for Kilimanjaro Safaris including the back of the house facilities for many animals including Lions, Cheetahs, Rhinoceros, African Elephants and more. Animals are not always visible from the train, but on occasion an animal can be seen in the backstage facilities.

The station at Rafiki's Planet Watch is brightly colored to correspond with the rest of the land.
